I was pretty much a sloth through 2020 and it hasn’t improved much in 2021…yet. I’m determined to lose this Covid-19 weight before the summer comes.
Pre-laziness and Covid, I used to run to maintain my weight. I don’t love running, but I found it to be effective and gave me a lot of burn for the amount of time I had to spend at it. The secret to keeping up my running schedule was listening to romance fiction on audiobook.
The advantage to audio books while exercising includes:
- Being distracted from the pain or discomfort of running
- Looking forward to exercise even if it’s just to hear more of the story
- Extending the workout time when hitting a good part of the book and not wanting to pause yet
This can work for other tasks besides running or exercise, such as doing chores.
Now that the weather is improving, I’m committed to running again and so I’m filling up my phone with audiobooks to listen to while I run.
While I use romance audiobooks to bribe myself into running, audiobooks can be fun for other times as well, such as chores, driving, laying on the beach, sitting in a waiting room…whenever you have mindless activities going on that you can enhance with a good book.
I have a Premium Plus Subscription through Audible, which gives me a credit for one book each month, 30% discount on additional books, monthly free book options, and anything in Plus Catalogue (sort of like Kindle Unlimited) that includes audiobooks, Amazon originals, and podcasts for just $14.95 per month. If I cancel, I can still keep the books I got with my credits. If I don’t use a credit, they roll over…for a time.
You can listen to Audible on your iPhone, Android, Windows, and on Amazon devices (i.e. Kindle). You can also listen with Amazon Echo by asking Alexa to play your audiobook. AND…if you’re like me and have Google Hubs, you can cast your Audible audiobook to it. You can listen to Audible through your Apple Watch as well. Unfortunately, you can’t through other smart watches (I have a Samsun Watch), so I use my phone or you can get a small MP3 player (i.e. if you want to run but don’t want to carry your phone).
If you’re not sure about audiobooks, you can test drive Audible with a free book. In fact, you can try Audible Premium Plus and Get Up to Two Free Audiobooks!
One of my favorite authors to listen to on audio book is Lauren Blakely, especially if Sebastian York is reading. Her books are light and fun, the voice is engaging, and the romances are sweet while the sexy bits are spicy. Big Rock was the first audiobook I listened to and it got me hooked on her, Sebastian York, and audiobooks.
Over the last year or so, she’s had entire casts narrating her books, which is like having a play on audio. If you’re ever distracted by listening to a man read a woman’s dialogue or vice versa, multiple readers eliminates that.
I don’t always limit myself to romances. I’ve also picked up a few French books to improve my speaking skills, and a few podcasts.
